Are Male Or Female Pomeranians Better

Sometimes people have formed preconceived notions about male and female dogs (I was one of them). In this article, I dig into everything you should know about male and female Pomeranians. Are male or female Pomeranians better?

Both male and female Pomeranians make great pets. There are slight differences that you can expect between the genders to consider when determining which is the perfect fit for your family.

Is It Better To Get A Male Or Female Pomeranian

It can be tough trying to decide between a male and a female Pomeranian.

In this article, I will dig deep into the similarities and differences between male and female Pomeranians.

I hope to provide you will all of the first-hand information that you need to make a decision between a male and a female.

Before we start I would like to introduce you to my Pomeranians. Willow is the petite black female and Murphy is my big ten-pound male.

What Is A Female Pomeranians Temperament

In the wild, it’s the females that rule the packs.

Females determine the pecking order, keep the peace and provide for the pack.

This natural behavior does extend to our domesticated dogs.

Female Pomeranians are:

  • Independent
  • Territorial
  • Stubborn
  • Moody
  • Sassy

Our female Pomeranian is full of independent sass.

She lets you know when she wants something and can be pretty forceful about it. She’ll bark at you or jump up and grab onto your clothing to get your attention.

She is not nearly as snuggly as our male. If she lays next to you on the couch consider it your lucky day, and don’t dare touch her or she will jump down and be on her way.

Are Pomeranians High Maintenance?

What Is A Male Pomeranians Temperament

Male Pomeranians have a very similar temperament to females but, there are some differences.

Male Pomeranians Are:

  • More affectionate
  • Demanding your attention
  • Territorial
  • Playful

Our male Pomeranian is a lot more clingy and loves to get attention.

He has a goofy almost doofus-like personality but, is also very intelligent.

He loves to play and is often hyper in the mornings ready to play and ready to snuggle on your lap in the evenings.

Although he is a big boy at ten pounds he would gladly stay in your arms and be carried around all day.

Are Male Or Female Pomeranians More Cuddly

Male Pomeranians are usually more cuddly compared to female Pomeranians.

This is absolutely the case in our house. Our male Pomeranian is extremely cuddly and our female will only cuddle on her terms.

In the evenings it’s cuddle time with Murphy. When he is ready he will grab his favorite stuffed toy and follow me around the house with it in his mouth. He wants to let me know that it’s time to sit on the couch and cuddle.

Are Female Pomeranians More Moody

Female Pomeranians tend to be moodier than male Pomeranians.

A female Pomeranian is more likely to want to express her independence. She may not want to be held that much and would rather be left alone.

A male Pomeranian on the other hand wants to be doated on and generally wants all of the attention he can get.

Are Male Or Female Pomeranians More Protective

It is said that female Pomeranians are more protective than males.

From our experience, they are both fiercely protective. My dogs are very leery of the German Shepherds next door along with their owners.

Both of my dogs will bark and growl when they feel threatened or unsure about something.

I know my male Pomeranian Murphy who is extremely attached to me would defend me with his life if needed.

Do Pomeranians Protect Their Owners?

Do Male Pomeranians Mark Their Territory

Male Pomeranians can mark their territory if they have not been neutered.

Once a male Pomeranian has been neutered it will stop marking behaviors and prevent future marking.

Male Pomeranians should be neutered when they are between four to six months of age.

Do Female Pomeranians Mark Their Territory

Territory marking is not strictly male behavior.

Females will sometimes urinate and mark their territory just like a male.

Territorial marking is a natural instinct for dogs when there are other dogs nearby.

It’s not as common of behavior in females and can be reduced or eliminated by having your female spayed.

Female Pomeranians should be spayed when they are five to nine months of age before they enter their first heat cycle.

Are Female Pomeranians Easier To Train

Female Pomeranians are known for being easier to train.

Males are often distracted and can take longer to learn new skills.

As far as house training goes, our female was house-trained a lot faster in comparison to our male. He took quite a lot longer to be completely house-trained.

It also may have been easier for our female since she came into a home with a house-trained dog that she could learn from. Our Murphy was on his own when it came to potty training.

We’ve done more obedience training with our male since he was the first dog, our female is the typical second child that didn’t get as much training.

We didn’t have any difficulty training our male in ten to fifteen increments every day. It also helps that he is very food motivated.

Do Male Or Female Pomeranians Live Longer

Male and Female Pomeranians both can live between 12 and 16 years.

Are Male Or Female Pomeranians More Healthy

Male and Female Pomeranians are both generally healthy dogs.

There are a handful of common health issues that can affect both genders.

  • Collapsed Tracheas
  • Luxating Patellas
  • Eye Problems

Females are vulnerable to breast cancer and uterine cancer.

The risk of uterine cancer can be eliminated by having your female spayed.

Males are vulnerable to prostate and testicular cancers.

Luckily, these risks can be reduced by having your male Pomeranian neutered.

Are Female Pomeranians Smaller Than Males

Female Pomeranians tend to be smaller than males but, that is not guaranteed.

Both males and females can be within the breed standard of 3 to 7 pounds.

Many Pomeranians like my Murphy are Throwbacks or Partial Throwback Pomeranians.

Our female happens to be 4.5 lbs and our male is 10 lbs.

The breeder that we got our Puppies from had a wide range of sizes everything from petite four-pound males to large ten-pound females and everything in between.

The gender of your Pomeranian will not determine its size. If you have a preference it’s best to talk with your breeder and learn more about the puppy’s parents.

Are Male Pomeranians Fluffier Than Females

Overall, both male and female Pomeranians are equally fluffy.

If a female Pomeranian has gone through a recent heat cycle or has weened a litter of puppies she will experience hormonal shedding.

The fluffiness of a Pomeranian is based on its genetics. Some Pomeranians have thicker undercoats which can give them a fluffier overall appearance.

Why Are Some Pomeranians Fluffier Than Others?

Do Female Pomeranians Require More Grooming Than Males

Besides the time period after a heat cycle or a weened litter of puppies where a female will go through an extra season of shedding, male and female Pomeranians will have the same grooming needs.

Every dog’s coat will be different.

Our female’s fur will get knots and mats so much easier than our male’s.

Also when we brush her the brushes will get stuck in her fur and pull on it if we aren’t careful.

Are male’s fur rarely gets tangled and is very easy to brush.

I don’t think the differences in their fur are based on their genders, it just happens to be different genetics and fur textures.

Do Male Or Female Pomeranians Get Along Better With Kids

Both male and female Pomeranians are good with kids, I wouldn’t say that one gender is better than the other.

There are differences that we should consider when choosing a dog that will be in a home with children.

  • Males are more cuddly and more likely to enjoy being picked up
  • Females are more independent
  • Males are more playful and interactive with toys
  • Males can be energetic and a play session could get rough

The environment for dogs will vary drastically depending on the age and maturity of your children.

Pomeranians are sometimes not the best fit in a home with very young children. Due to Pomeranians being petite in size, they may easily get injured by a young child that is too rough or accidentally steps on it.

You would be the best judge of your personal family situation for determining if a Pomeranian is a right fit.

Do Male Or Female Pomeranians Get Along Better With Other Dogs

We automatically think that male dogs are the most dominant and are more likely to get into a dog fight.

This is a bit of a misconception, males are usually welcoming toward other male dogs. Often a male dog will view the other male as a potential play partner.

Females on the other hand are very territorial. If any other dog starts to show domination or alpha body language a female is more likely to attempt to put that other dog in its place within the pack.

It’s said that females are very jealous if you show attention to another dog, I’ve actually seen the opposite. My male is very attached to me and gets very jealous when I give our female attention.

He doesn’t approach the situation with aggression but, he does put himself between us to make his presence known.

As with every attribute, each dog will be individually different. The more you socialize your dog and have patience the better acclimated it will be to different people, animals, and situations.

Are Male Or Female Pomeranians Better For A Family

Both male and female Pomeranians are great fits for families.

It’s more about a Pomeranian being able to fit into your lifestyle versus the gender of the dog.

The bigger things to consider are.

  • Time availability- Pomeranians do not like to be left alone. They are prone to separation anxiety.
  • Dedication- It takes a dedicated family to train and care for a dog
  • Space- Although Pomeranains are small it’s best to make sure your dog with have plenty of outdoor space to run and play.
  • Funds- Not only are Pomeranians expensive to purchase but caring for a dog can add up.

Do Female Pomeranians Cost More

Female Pomeranians are in higher demand compared to male Pomeranians and will usually cost more.

You can expect to pay anywhere between $1200-$6000 for a Pomeranian puppy.

A female puppy can be $200-$600 more than a male.

Are Male Or Female Pomeranians Harder To Find

Due to a higher demand for female Pomeranians, females are harder to find.

Due to the small litter size, it can be difficult to find a Pomeranian breeder that is near your area.

Common Myths About Male And Female Pomeranians

There are some common myths that are associated with male or female Pomeranians.

  • Some believe that males and females only come in certain colors. Both males and females can come in any of the coat colors.
  • Some say the males have better-looking coats. This isn’t true, although females can go through periods of additional shedding after a heat cycle or litter of puppies, gender does not determine the quality of a Pomeranian’s coat.
  • It’s a myth that males make better guard dogs. Both males and females make wonderful guard dogs.

My Experience With Male And Female Pomeranians

I have both a male and female Pomeranian.

They are both wonderful little dogs that my family loves very much.

My male is more cuddly than our female but, as time goes on I am seeing changes in our female’s comfort level with cuddling.

Even though our female is not a huge cuddler she is extremely affectionate and always wants to shower you with kisses.

Our male took much longer to be house-trained in comparison to our female but, we did get him first.

We were a household that for some reason had only male dogs and were a little hesitant to get a female based on some of the myths that males are more loving and cuddly.

It was actually our daughter that wanted to get a girl dog and convinced us to add a female to our pack. It also happened to be that all of the puppies within the litter were female.

We love our little Willow girl and kind of feel a little silly about a preconceived notion about female dogs.

In the future, we will not hesitate to get a male or female Pomeranian.

Should I Get A Male Or Female Pomeranian

You can’t go wrong with either gender.

Honestly, having a Pomeranian is sure to add so much joy to your life.

Some say a female may be best as a single dog and a male is better in a multiple-dog home. I don’t find that to be true.

You need to evaluate the dynamic of your home when deciding if a male or female dog is the right fit.

I suggest you talk to possible breeders and see what’s available.

Final Thoughts

I personally love all Pomeranians male and female!

We are a bit obsessed with Pomeranians in our house.

If you are thinking of adding a Pomeranian to your family consider your family dynamics and the genders of the animals within your home when considering a male or female.
