Where Do Pomeranians Come From
Pomeranians originate from the frigid Northern Region of Europe once called Pomerania. This region is now part of Poland and Western Germany.
Once upon a time Pomeranians or Zwergspitz (as called in some European Countries) were working dogs that pulled sleds, assisted with hunting, herding livestock, and sounding alarms.
The Pomeranian used to be much larger than it is today. Pomeranains were once 20-30 lbs During the 1800’s Queen Victoria became very fond of this fluffy bread and started a breeding program with the intent of reducing the size. She desired a smaller stature that would be more suited as a lap dog.
Queen Victoria played a pivotal role in transforming the Pomeranains of yesteryear into the small companion dogs of today. Due to the attention, Queen attracted to her decorated show dogs the Pomeranian breed rose in populairty.
Where Do Huskies Come From
Siberian Huskies originate from the North-Eastern part of Russia called Siberia. They were bred by the Chukchi people who used them as sled dogs, guard dogs, and companions.
Siberian Huskies have an ancient lineage that dates back over 4000 years. The Siberian Husky has been classified as one of the 14 oldest dogs known.
The Siberian Husky bred by the Chukchi consists of Spitz and Laika Bloodlines.
In the early 1900s Siberian Huskies were brought to Alaska to compete in sled dog races, where they consistently took the top spot.
What Are Spitz Dogs
Pomeranains are the smallest of all the dogs that fall under the Spitz category. A Spitz dog is not a breed on its own but, a classification of many dog breeds that have similar features and have similar origins.
Spitz dogs may have come from different regions all over the world but, they all originated in cold, harsh climates. They were tough dogs who survived through all of the elements and tough work.
These hard-working dogs had many jobs including pulling sleds, herding and guarding cattle, hunting, watching and defending, and companionship.
Today many Spitz dogs still have that wild hardworking drive like Akitas and Chow Chows, where others have been bred to be the perfect companion. That would be our beloved Pomeranians.
Spitz dogs share many of the same physical features.
- Pointed “fox-like” muzzles
- Pointy ears
- Almond-shaped eyes
- Long thick fur with an insulating undercoat and longer outer coat
- A curly tail that drapes over their back
Currently the AKC acknowledges between 50-70 differenet breeds as a Spitz.
