Pomeranains are known for being small fluffy little companions with curly tails. Even with such a distinct appearance, there are many other breeds that could easily pass as a Pomeranian. What are they?

Some dog breeds like the Samoyed and German Spitz look just like white Pomeranains but, bigger. Others like the Schiperkee and Finnish Spitz look like black or red Pomeranians. The Keeshond and Norweigan Elkhound resemble the wolf sable.

What Dog Breeds Look Similar To Pomeranians
There are many dog breeds both large and small that look strangely similar to our fluffy little Pomeranian.

Samoyeds look like big white Pomeranians with their wedge-shaped face, fluffy coat, and curly tail.
The Samoyed is also a spitz that originates from a cold region in Siberia.
The name Samoyed comes from the Samoyedic people who lived with and trained these dogs for hunting.
You can expect a Samoyed to be very intelligent, hardworking, and loving companions.
Japanese Spitz
The Japanese Spitz looks like a white Pomeranian but, slightly larger in size.
Originating from Japan, it is believed that these dogs are decedents of the German Spitz.
Japanese Spitz is a carefree, loving, and loyal dog that is always up for fun and adventure.
Finnish Spitz
The Finnish Spitz had a fox-faced appearance with pointy ears and the signature curly plumed tail found among the Spitz dogs.
This breed originates from Finland and was used to hunt rodents, squirrels, and bears.
The Finnish Spitz is an active dog that would enjoy a yard to run around in.
German Spitz
The German Spitz has the closest resemblance to Pomeranians in looks and temperament.
Originating from Germany, the German Spitz is one of the oldest dog breeds from Europe.
Just like Pomeranians, the German Spitz is a very loyal watchdog that becomes very attached to its owner.
Indian Spitz
The Indian Spitz is another breed that looks very similar to White Pomeranians.
Just like its name says, the Indian Spitz originates from India where this dog breed was extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s when it was very difficult to import different dog breeds.
The Indian Spitz is known for not getting along very well with other dogs, making them best suited in homes without other animals.
Ther are intelligent, energetic, active, and very playful.
American Eskimo Dog
Another white Pomeranian look-alike with a wedge-shaped face, curly tail, and fluffy coat.
The American Eskimo is larger in size when compared to our petite Pomeranians.
Originally, the American Eskimo Dog went by the German Spitz name but, in the second world war, the name was changed in the United States removing any negative connotations.
American Eskimo Dogs excel in obedience trials. These dogs are highly intelligent, energetic, and playful.
Schipperke
Schipperkes look very similar to black Pomeranians but, they do have a longer muzzle.
You will notice that many Schipperkes do not have tails.
One would assume that this breed is born without a tail but, that is not true.
Some Schipperkke’s tails are docked at birth, which has become controversial.
A Schiperkkes beautiful tail is very similar to a Pomeranian’s tail that will curl over its back.
Schipperkes originate from Belgium where they established themselves as great hunters.
Schipperkes are very playful and make wonderful family pets.
Keeshond
Keeshonds look like large wolf sable Pomeranains with wedge shape heads, curly tails, and fluffy coats of black and grey.
The Keeshond is originally from Holland where it remains a symbol of Dutch Patriotism.
Keeshonds are very playful and enjoy a bit of mischief.
Norweigan Elkhound
The Norwegian Elkhound is a Spitz that looks very similar to a Keeshond or Wolf Sable Pomeranian.
The Norweigan Elkhound is a medium-sized dog that as its name states are originally from Norway.
Norweigan Elkhounds are fun-loving, loyal dogs that make wonderful family dogs.
I had a Norwegian Elkhound that was an amazing dog and friend.
Finnish Lapphund
The Finnish Lapphund can often be twice the size of a Pomeranian but, has very similar features including wedge-shaped faces, perky ears, fluffy coats, and curly tails.
Originally from Finland, these dogs were traditionally used for herding reindeer.
Finnish Lapphund crave companionship and hate being left alone.
Tibetan Spaniel
The Tibetan Spaniel is a small fluffy dog that some may say looks similar to the Pomeranian.
Originally from Tibet, these small dogs have been companions to monks for decades.
Although, the name leads you to believe that these dogs are spaniels, in the original meaning of the term.
Tibetan Spaniels are devoted, loving, and make wonderful watchdogs
Volipino Italino
The Volipino Italino is a Pomeranians Italian look alike.
They are slightly larger than Pomeranians with a fluffy white coat.
The Volipino Italiano is a loyal and loving companion.
Japanese Chin
Some believe that the small fluffy Japanese Chin closely resembles a Pomeranian.
Japanese Chin originates from Japan where they are also known as the Japanese Spaniel.
These small dogs are a brachycephalic breed that has short muzzles and “pushed in” noses making it harder for them to breathe.
Japanese Chin is known for being very loving dogs.
Long-Haired Chihuahua
The long-haired Chihuahua is a small toy breed that may be confused with Pomeranains
These small dogs originate from Mexico and come in a large variety of coat lengths and colors.
Chihuahuas are similar to Pomeranians with their big dog personalities.

A Papillon looks similar to a Pomeranian but, has much larger ears with fringe that sticks up off them.

Pomsky’s have become extremely popular in recent years.

The Samoyed looks just like a giant white Pomeranian.
You could also argue that the Keeshond also looks just like a giant wolf sable Pomeranian.
Final Thoughts
Pomeranians are amazing little dogs that have so many wonderful qualities beyond their physical appearance.
I have a soft spot for dogs with a Spitz background.
Any dog that is a Spitz often has many of the same physical features and personality traits since they all originate from the same part of the world with similar histories.
Regardless of which breed on this list is the best fit for you, you are bound to find your new best friend.
